I bought this little car off of Ebay based on the pictures shown above, and a couple of cursory glances as I walked past it in the morning.
March 2003
Getting it back was supposed to be an easy job, me + my 2 brothers just push it the 100 yards or so to my house. But no. Raining, very dark and one brother 'forgot' he was playing snooker that night. Oh and the handbrake had bound on slightly, terrific. Fortunately the sellers other half offered to tow it for me. So with my brother following me (cos there were no lights working or otherwise on the car) we managed to get it to my place without incident. Then a quick cover up with a tarpaulin to keep it from the wife's critical eye.

No luck with generic radiator hose (too small a bore) I decided to try the local auto factors. I took the broken pieces with me and asked the guy behind the counter for a couple of hoses like these. he asked what they were off and i told him and Austin A35, his reply, 'Probably not mate, I don't think they even list them any more' and sure enough they didn't. I thought I might have to resort to ordering from a specialist parts supplier until it clicked that it's and A series engine i.e Mini. So back I went this time and asked if they had any early Mini hoses I could look at and compare my broken bits with and voila botom hoses match. The top hose came via a longer hose for a Reliant that just needed a short length cut off. Summer 2003
Been busy with the garden so there hasn't been a lot done to either car.
After a quick look round in daylight at the weekend I thought it didn't look too bad. At a glance in the passenger footwell I saw what I thought was a funny looking jack handle. No it's the starting handle (how the hell do you use one of these).
Well first things first, off to Motorsave for a manual, a battery and some radiator hose.
Managed to get the engine running once the hoses were back on. The first couple of attempts came to nought as the car started but spluttered and died, fuel starvation it sounded like. Then I checked the choke cable again, and lo and behold the wimp here hadn't pulled the choke out far enough. Started first time after that and ran quite well considering it apparently hasn't been run since last summer. Now I just need to learn how to use the welder I got for my birthday and I can weld the wings and floor back up.
I managed to get a set of headlamps off an early 90s Mini to go on the A35. The Mini still seems to use some of the wiring set up that the A35 did, the headlight wiring plugged straight in matching colour for colour (after I'd scraped the crud off the wiring to be able to tell what colour the wires were), so that made life easier.
Also wired up the rear stop / tail lights and number plate light. Word of warning, if working around the boot of an A35 make sure it is propped open and not just sitting upright. I managed to get one hell of a lump on my head when the wind blew it shut when I was wiring up the rear lights >-(
The Mini is proving useful, so far I've managed to get 3 of the 4 indicators I need from scrap yard Minis. So the rear indicators have been wired in and work. The front ones will have to wait until the wings are sorted.
September 2003
Started removing the rust from the drivers footwell. Not as bad as I had first thought but bad enough. I've had to cut a hole about 6" by about 18", just need to make a template up from cardboard to check for size / shape and then cut a suitable patch out and weld it in. Spring 2004
Finally started the welding on the drivers side footwell, now that I have found some metal to weld to! The inner sill is missing about the bottom 50mm
Got caught up trying to get the house ready for the arrival of my Wife's 'project' (Our first child) so very little more will be done on either car.
Summer 2004
We had a bouncing baby boy in May so no real time to spend on the cars as he needs feeding every 2 hours and I'm not aloud to make any noise.
Autumn 2004
I've now figured out, thanks to a mobile child monitor, that I can make a reasonable amount of noise in the garage whilst not disturbing the baby or my wife, so I can now spend from 9pm onwards working on the A35.
I now have the front O/S wing welded up, but I still haven't finished the drivers side footwell.
The front brakes were seized on which proved to be nothing more than a perished O ring on one of the cylinders, so a 10 pence fix instead of £100+ for new cylinders. I also replaced the drum and pads with a set I got off Ebay.
The heater is now plumbed in and wired up to the ignition. I ended up using some domestic sink waste pipe and bends to connect up the heater pipes to the screen vents, hopefully it wont look to daft once the plastic is painted black, not that I care as long as it works.
I GIVE UP, It's up for sale on eBay here.
